Introduction:
DBFZ(Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum), and collaborators: PlantVillage, Biochar Life, Circular Bionutrient Economy Network, and Ithaka Institute, are pleased to announce an Artisinal C-Sink Study Tour taking place in Kenya  in October 25-30, 2024. The tour will focus on small-scale (“Artisinal”) biochar production and the training and monitoring of Artisinal C-Sink credits produced. This event aims to equip participants with practical knowledge of biochar production techniques, best practices in managing carbon removal, and the latest research and technical advancements in small-scale biochar technology.

Background:
In recent years, smallholder biochar production has gained attention as a cost-effective and scalable intervention to incentivize carbon removal and regeneration of soils. Biochar, a charcoal-like soil amendment, removes plant-derived carbon destined for atmospheric emissions and, when applied back to land, returns the carbon to soils. The voluntary carbon dioxide removal (CDR) market holds the potential to incentivize this process through carbon credit accreditation and sale.

Objectives:
Learning on C-Sink Project Management and Monitoring: Training will focus on the administration and monitoring of biochar projects with an emphasis on tracking carbon sequestration and ensuring project scalability.

  • Hands-on Biochar Training: Participants will gain practical experience in producing biochar using simple, cost-effective techniques suited for smallholder farmers.

  • Knowledge Exchange on Biochar Applications: Participants will learn about the latest research findings and technical innovations in small-scale biochar production and discuss the feasibility of biochar projects across agricultural sectors of E. Africa.

  • Sustainable Agriculture Promotion: Highlight the potential of biochar in promoting sustainable farming practices by improving soil fertility and contributing to climate resilience

Expected Outcomes:

  • Understand the technical aspects of smallholder biochar production and be able to implement these systems on their farms or in their communities.

  • Be equipped with skills in monitoring and managing biochar projects, specifically through the use of digital tools like the PlantVillage App.

  • Gain insights into the latest research and technological advances in the field of biochar production and carbon sequestration.

  • Build capacity to pitch and implement biochar C-sink projects in their municipalities to reduce carbon emissions, improve soil fertility, and promote sustainable agriculture practices.

Program Overview:
The tour will include a combination of field visits, hands-on training, and facilitated discussions and learning sessions in Uasin Gichu, Baringo, and Nairobi. Participants in the study tour will engage in a series of informative and practical sessions.

All participant slots have been filled at this time but if you are in the area and would like to join for a day or partial day of the tour and subsequent networking please write to us by Email for more information.
